At a time when I was walking...

At a time when I was walking through deep waters a large open sore broke out on my body and spread until it became very alarming. I was searching earnestly for a clearer understanding of the Christ, but it seemed as if the more I worked and studied, the worse the physical condition became.

One morning, while it was yet dark, I wakened in great distress. I started to go over the definition of God, which our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has given us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 465): "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." I had worked with this definition daily for ten years or more, but that particular morning I could not remember any of it except "God is incorporeal." I repeated this many times, striving to remember the next line but could not recall another word.

As I lay in bed saying over and over again, "God is incorporeal," suddenly it was as though my whole consciousness were flooded with light, and I saw that God is incorporeal and that man is also. This glimpse of reality lasted for only a moment, but a great sense of peace and joy came to me, and I fell asleep. When I wakened and started to dress there was not even a trace of disease to be seen. The words pertaining to the healing of Naaman came to me (II Kings (5:14), "His flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean." Tears of gratitude and joy started to flow, not only because of the physical healing, but because at that moment I knew I had found the Christ, the true idea of God.
