FROM ANNUAL REPORTS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

Rights and Privileges of Christian Scientists

Ontario, Canada

For the information of the Christian Scientists in the Field, inquiries were made of the Department of National Defense, Ottawa, as to the requirements necessary for the appointment of a Christian Science chaplain in the Canadian Armed Services. We were advised that it would be necessary for approximated seven hundred and fifty adherents of Christian Science to he recorded on the nominal rolls of that department. This indicates that it is advisable for members of Christian Science churches and adherents of this religion to make sure when enlisting that they are correctly classified as Christian Scientists, not merely as Protestants.

During the year a communication was received from the Chaplain of the Fleet, Department of National Defense, Naval Service, Ottawa, requesting information which would enable him to arrange for Christian Scientists in this particular branch of the services to receive the care and attention to which they are entitled. This information was promptly furnished. In his letter of inquiry, the chaplain stated, "At any time when one of the practitioners desires to visit his boys who are serving with us, our padre would see to it that the boys are duly informed of the time and place in which to meet the practitioner." May we encourage all Christian Scientists to take full advantage of this thoughtful provision.

Oregon

Appropriate steps have been taken to assure telephone priority for Christian Science practitioners in the event of a national emergency. This office is working closely with the Oregon Civil Defense Agency to protect our people from mass medical requirements under disaster conditions, while at the same time offering assistance to defense officials on bona fide and authoritative relief measures which do not require abandonment of our religion.

Colorado

Civil defense authorities are encouraging public schools to provide classes in first aid. As Christian Scientists cannot afford to be found indifferent to the needs of their fellow man, no exemption is being requested for the children of Christian Scientists unless there is evidence to show that such instruction is being used for medical indoctrination.
