The Comforter, Christian Science, came to me when I was in great need of healing. Having had described to me a case of cancer— a much-loved uncle having passed on from this disease—I became obsessed by the fear that I was suffering from it also, I became more and more afraid.

I was told after some unsuccessful treatment from a doctor that he could do no more for me. He proposed, however, that I should undergo a slight operation. In my distress I sent for a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Previously my mother had encouraged me to read an authorized pamphlet on Christian Science and, when handing it to me, had made this remark: "If God sent sickness, why did His Son, Christ Jesus, come and undo the work his Father had done?" The logic of this statement appealed to me, and I resolved to give myself the chance of being healed through Christian Science as others had been.

When I told my husband of this plan, he recommended that I ask the doctor how much time I could be given before having an operation. The doctor, who was very kind, proposed that I wait one week. On arriving home from the interview I telephoned in great fear and apprehension to a Christian Science practitioner for help. I said, "He has given me only a week." She replied, "What a long time!" Treatment was begun, and in a few days I was so much better that all thought of returning to the doctor was dismissed, and I informed him of my progress and decision.
