Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
El Cerrito Journal
El Cerrito, California (First Church).
On Sunday, December 30, First Church of Christ, Scientist, El Cerrito, held dedication services in the church building, 601 Lexington Avenue.
In January, 1941, a group of Christian Science students, recognizing the need of a Christian Science Sunday School in El Cerrito, started holding regular Sunday services, as well as Sunday School, in the home of a member, following the forms given in the Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts. In May, 1941, this group moved its meetings to the Veterans Memorial Hall and in October of that year was recognized by The Mother Church as Christian Science Society. At this time, building lots were deeded to the society on which to build its church, and a building fund started. War restrictions, however, prevented building for some time, and it was not until March of 1949 that ground was broken.
