PEACE THROUGH SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING

What is peace, and how are we to attain it? These are questions that are uppermost in many hearts. A world torn by strife and dissension is longing for peace but knows not how to find it. Among the great bequests the Master, Christ Jesus, bequeathed to us is the gift of peace. He said (John 14:27): "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

True and permanent peace is spiritual. It rests upon firm foundations in contrast to a temporal peace given by the will of mankind, for true peace is based upon the Christ, the unassailable foundation of spiritual understanding. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 506): "Through divine Science, Spirit, God, unites understanding to eternal harmony. The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace." It does not matter what the circumstances are that confront us; the peace which is born of spiritual apprehension remains unbroken and serene.

Mortal mind moves in extremes. It either vegetates in a false sense of security produced by apathy or ignorance, or is convulsed with emotions and excited by some fabulous expectancy which quickly passes into an opposite mental state of disillusionment. There is no stability in mortal mind; therefore it has no real foundation for peace.
