While lifting my car bumper in...

While lifting my car bumper in order to disentangle it from another bumper I heard a peculiar sound in my chest as if something had given way there. Fear entered my thinking, and my chest quickly became very painful. I turned to Christian Science for help.

Having just studied what Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health about using the reflection in a mirror to illustrate what man is as God's reflection (pp. 515, 516), I saw that just as a reflection in a mirror could not have anything unlike the maker of the reflection, so man, as God's reflection, could not possibly have anything unlike his Maker. As I realized this fact a little more clearly the painful difficulty diminished, but it did not leave me.

As a further help a statement from Science and Health came to me (p. 569): "Every mortal at some period, here or hereafter, must grapple with and overcome the mortal belief in a power opposed to God." I recognized that I needed to establish in my consciousness the truth that God is indeed the only power. In thinking along this line, I saw that since God is infinite and omnipotent, there could be no room for any other power. God, Spirit, being good, good must be the sole power in the universe. God's infinitude excludes anything unlike Himself, either as substance or as power.
