Thoroughly discouraged because...
Thoroughly discouraged because of financial problems and ill-health, I was led to call on a Christian Science practitioner, who showed me how to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. She explained to me that God is ever present and all powerful. With new hope I realized a turning point had come in my life. After discarding all material remedies, I unreservedly began to rely on Science. In that first week a skin trouble, which had embarrassed me for fifteen years and which medical doctors and skin specialists had failed to cure, began to fade away as I glimpsed and held to the truth concerning the real man. As I progressed in my daily study of Christian Science and practiced it, other inharmonious conditions in my affairs disappeared. My financial situation improved as I learned more about honesty, forgiveness, gratitude, and humility.
For years now I have been tirelessly working long hours, whereas before, two or three hours of work fatigued me greatly. With the Psalmist I can truly say of God Ps. 40:2), "He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings."
Most of my problems have been met by my own efforts to know the truth. But the following experience shows how our Christian Science practitioners serve as minutemen to help us prove that "trials are proofs of God's care" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 66). One morning I was seized with an alarming pain, and I immediately worked to know the truth as we are taught in Christian Science. The condition greatly improved as I studied the Lesson-Sermon for that week. However, I was unable to take food or water without pain. I worked mentally to rise above the distressing condition, but I grew steadily worse.
