Contributing To Community Development

[Extracts from a report prepared for the Reading Room Division by the executive board of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist]

San Mateo, California

This branch Church of Christ, Scientist, has maintained its Reading Room in downtown locations since April, 1908. Being desirous of keeping abreast of the times, we changed locations periodically, in step with progressive community development. Each successive change was, however, the consequence of unfoldment and demonstration. Since 1932 the Reading Room has occupied desirable street-level locations in the choice business section

In 1946 we received notice that a renewal of the lease on our Reading Room location was not to be considered. At the moment there seemed no other location available and no prospective one in sight. Authorizing the executive board to appoint a committee to investigate, the membership united in consecrated, diligent effort, realizing that progressive branch church activity is based on the understanding of the law of God and on willingness to yield to the guidance of that law.
