Thou hast put gladness in my...
"Thou hast put gladness in my heart" (Ps. 4:7). While I was employed in a large Midwestern university, I became acquainted with a student of Christian Science. At that time I was suffering from mental depression, which was developing into a nervous breakdown. I could not sleep at night, was depressed all the time, and terrified at my thinking. This friend would often help me with my work and then take me out on the campus for a walk and tell me some of the truths of Christian Science. She advised me to see a practitioner, which I did. Each visit was like the watering of a neglected plant, for I drank in the truth most eagerly. I continued to study the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and attend the church services and lectures, and with help from the practitioner, I was healed.
At the time I was living with an older sister, who had brought me up since childhood. Her husband was a physician, and she was concerned as to whether a Christian Scientist and a physician could live in the same household. She asked me why, since I was all right again, I did not return to the orthodox church young people's group of which I was a member. I saw that I had to take a stand for Christian Science, and I told her I intended to continue to study Christian Science, as it had healed me and was satisfying my religious needs. She told me that under the circumstances, I had better look for another place to live.
I located a room in a girl's club, but the evening that I was to leave, a messenger came to the door with word that I could not have this room for three weeks and that it might not be available then. My sister took the message and came rushing to me, putting her arms around me and stating that she could not think of my leaving home, regardless of the stand I had taken for Christian Science. When I saw this demonstration of love, I responded, unpacked my things, and remained in that home for three years longer. When I did move, it was truly a demonstration and blessed all concerned, I learned many needed lessons during those years. It was well proved that Christian Science never interferes with the harmony of any home or business, but rather establishes it more firmly.
