"COULD YE NOT WATCH... ONE HOUR?"
THE challenging call to be spiritual watchmen for the great Cause of Christian Science comes to Christian Scientists everywhere, today and every day, for Christian Science alone can bring true salvation to a troubled world. During his ministry Christ Jesus, our great Way-shower, constantly showed the meaning of true watchfulness. Just before his betrayal and crucifixion, Jesus took three of his disciples and went into the quiet haven of the garden of Gethsemane, where he asked them to wait and watch with him.
It is recorded that he went a little apart from them and fell on his face to pray and meet mentally the greatest challenge of his ministry. The human outlook and struggle were terrific, but they resulted in the complete surrender of Jesus to the will of God. On his return to the three disciples he found them asleep and rebuked them with these words (Matt. 26:40, 41): "Could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation."
Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, throughout her writings calls upon us to be spiritual watchmen. She tells us that there are many asleep in these stirring days who should awaken themselves and arouse others from sleep. Today the Christ speaks to all, in the words of Jesus, "Could ye not watch with me one hour?" The daily duty of every Christian Scientist is to watch his thoughts and to arouse himself and others from the mesmeric beliefs of life in matter, of wars and rumors of wars, of fear and lack and discouragement, and to follow in the way of spiritual living. For his own progress and safety, as well as for the great contribution which he can make to his fellow men, the Christian Scientist is called upon to be an alert, regular, and systematic watcher and worker.
