MAKING THE ESSENCE OF CHURCH TANGIBLE

[Extracts from reports prepared by branch church workers]

Our new Reading Room had been open about six weeks when the librarian reported a decided increase in the number of inquiries about Christian Science and also in the sale of literature. That it is meeting the needs and awakening the interest of our community is evidenced by the splendid fruitage reports she and her staff share with us. The window display and the center of town location add much to the inviting entrance of the ground-floor Reading Room. From the moment the first displays were placed in the window, strangers stopped to read.

One of these window readers came in and asked questions about "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for some time before purchasing a copy. He said he had heard of Christian Science, but had not thought to inquire about it. Now his daughter was ill, and he felt Science and Health might help her. When he returned to the Reading Room, he reported that his daughter had become so interested in the textbook that she could not put it down. She had begun to improve almost immediately. Later he brought her to the Reading Room. It was an inspiration to see her happiness. She said that she did not know anything could be so beautiful as Christian Science, and she knew she was healed. She told the librarian that in her enthusiasm she had mentioned Christian Science to friends who scoffed at it. With her face alight, she exclaimed, "No one can scoff at that book!"
