In 1940 I was in France and volunteered to join a Polish division at the front. I was put in charge of a mobile canteen. Before joining the unit I went to a Christian Science practitioner in Paris and told him that I did not feel quite sure that I would keep calm when facing danger. He promised to work for me and assured me that I would not be afraid. He also told me that evil could not see me or touch me or those with me. This proved to be true, and I must add that I did not see evil either.
Once in a zone evacuated by civilians we visited a unit between battles. When leaving them we heard the siren and shooting of the artillery, but did not notice on our way home anything unusual. Half a year later, when I met the soldiers of that unit, they were most surprised at seeing me alive. I learned that the road we had gone over had been heavily bombed, and the soldiers were sure that we must have been killed. They could not come to our rescue because they were engaged in battle and then had to move forward.
