SECURITY

"Thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety" (Job 11:18). These words hint the assurance of safety and restful thought accorded to man forever by his Father, God. Security has been sought by mankind down through the ages, and in almost everything men have been activated by a desire for the protection, care, and continuity of the individual and his family, usually by material means, but frequently through reliance upon divine power. Dependence upon God as their defense and protection gave the Hebrew nation security and success. When they fell from that spiritual altitude, they were overcome and taken into captivity.

In the Christian era, when nations have clung most closely to righteous ideals they have prospered and been preserved. Now, through Mary Baker Eddy, our beloved Leader, we have the unfoldment of Christian Science, which, if understood and practiced, gives security to individuals and nations. Christian Science teaches men to relinquish their trust in material force as their sole protection and rely upon the perfect care of their infinite Father-Mother, God.

Security of employment in a good position is sought by men and women because they believe that it ensures supply for themselves and their families. But reliance upon a material position for sustenance places them in a precarious situation where the loss of material employment might leave them destitute. The Christian Scientist learns that his real position is demonstrated by reliance upon divine Love, and obedience to God gives success in any honest business in which he may be engaged. It is right that one should declare and know that his real position is purely spiritual and that it is established in divine Mind.
