PROOFS OF GOD'S CARE

Mary Baker Eddy says, "Trials are proofs of God's care" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 66). A dictionary gives as one definition of proof "demonstration, conclusive evidence," and adds, "Proof is the effect or result of evidence." In other words, proof is a conclusion, statement, or fact that is verified and established by the evidence leading to it.

God cares for us, and we can prove it. But the proof of His care is more readily apparent to us if we understand how He cares for us. A study of the seven synonyms for God (Science and Health, p. 465) shows that God cannot be less than loving. It is the nature of Love to love. Mind must be intelligent, Soul is necessarily perfect, and Life is always alive. It is no more possible for Mind to cease being intelligent than it is for it to express unintelligence. Mind knows all; but since Mind, God, is infinite, it cannot know anything unlike itself. Indeed, in reality there actually is nothing for it to know except itself and its manifestation.

A human sense of care and sympathy is expressed by a sharing or understanding of whatever problem presents itself. Parents' care for their children is expressed in love, wisdom, kindness, assistance, protection, and guidance, and these qualities illustrate the tender care our Father-Mother God has for all His children. Trials are indeed proofs of God's care, but not in the sense that they are sent to us by God in order to prove His care. God does not need to know our troubles in order to care for us; indeed, if He knew them they would be real and incapable of dissolution. Everything that God makes is good and forever remains so.
