Since early childhood I have been sustained by the truth, as revealed by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. Twenty years ago I was stricken with an illness which was diagnosed as contagious cerebrospinal meningitis. In accordance with the state law a physician was called, who required that I be removed to an isolation hospital. There both the attending doctor and a specialist said that death was inevitable.

From the very first, Christian Science help had been given. Paralysis, together with its deforming effect on the body, had been completely met before the arrival of the physicians. What seemed to be a crippled ankle was healed. Deafness in one ear, believed to be an aftermath of the disease, was met within a very short time by my holding to the fact given in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, that the faculty of hearing is spiritual and indestructible. Within a year my first child was born, thereby contradicting the mortal law which says that time is needed to rebuild a body which has been completely broken down. My recovery was considered miraculous by doctors. Severe headaches have also been healed.

When I was a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School in my early teens, my grandfather, who was ill and who had been deaf since early manhood, asked that I tell him about Christian Science. At first I felt inadequate to do this, but I began by explaining in a childlike way man's relationship with God. Soon he said, "Now I understand what I've never been able to get clear before!" I continued speaking to him, and in a short time he asked me not to shout at him. He was hearing normally.
