SEEKING AND FINDING

To know God is the highest of all privileges and the most fruitful of all accomplishments. It is, however, the greatest of all tasks.

For those seeking consciously to know their Maker, the Scriptures, in the light of Christian Science, furnish many guides. Jesus' teaching that the pure in heart shall see God indicates that the quest is a mental one, consummated through the purification of the heart's motives and thoughts. To this end, the keeping of the First Commandment (Ex. 20:3), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," is an infallible means; for to keep this Commandment one must acknowledge God to be the Father-Mother of all and His kingdom to be the only present, all-powerful, and ever-operating government.

Active seeking inevitably is rewarded. Just as Elisha proved to the widow that the using of the oil she had, caused it to increase sufficiently to become a source of abundant supply for both her and her children, so active using of the knowledge of God which one has at hand will make it grow into greater, more fruit-bearing understanding of Him. A young visitor to a Christian Science Sunday School proved this. During the class she had been told that man cannot be separated from God, who is both Life and Love. These two synonyms for God awakened within her consciousness an awareness of His presence and reality. When, a little later, she became ill and realized that the doctors were expecting her to die, she remembered the truth she had learned that Sunday and reasoned something like this: "God is Life; so Life will not leave me. He is also Love, and He loves me and will not, therefore, allow me to be separated from Life." This active use of the glimpse she had gained of her Maker in the Sunday School rescued the girl from death and restored her to health.
