ANGELS
The Bible gives many instances in which angels played a vital part in bringing peace and harmony into human lives. From childhood these records of angelic visitants have meant much to me, but since I have been studying Christian Science they have meant even more, because Science teaches that angels are good thoughts from God which come to men to deliver and protect them. On page 299 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us: "My angels are exalted thoughts, appearing at the door of some sepulchre, in which human belief has buried its fondest earthly hopes. With white fingers they point upward to a new and glorified trust, to higher ideals of life and its joys."
This new and glorified trust in God, good, as omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, brings with it a proportionate distrust or disbelief in evil and matter and shows them to be wholly supposititious. At the same time it makes possible the achievement of the heart's highest ideals and the attainment of its greatest joy.
When Jacob was fleeing for his life and had to sleep in the wilderness on a pillow of stones, he saw the angels of God ascending and descending on a ladder which reached from earth to heaven. He was so uplifted by this vision that he could say, even in that desolate spot (Gen. 28:16, 17): "Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. ... And this is the gate of heaven." Abraham was kept from slaying his son by an angel of the Lord. Elijah was fed by an angel. Daniel was saved from the lions by God's angel which shut the lions' mouths. And angels announced the coming of Jesus as the one who should bring peace and joy to all men. These are just a few of the many instances in which we see that angels are pure and holy thoughts from God which reveal the glory of God to mankind.
