Over sixteen years ago I was in the depths physically, mentally, and financially. I was a chronic alcoholic, an inveterate smoker, and a professional gambler. I was also suffering from heart trouble and a diabetic condition. Being classified as totally and permanently disabled by a topflight insurance company, I was the recipient of a substantial annuity. My condition was despaired of, and eventually I was incarcerated in a government mental institution.

While there I was assigned to a ward which was presided over by a medical officer who recommended Christian Science to me. Thanks to God, I became interested and read the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy for nearly a year, although I understood very little of what I read. My condition grew worse, and I complained to the doctor, but at his insistence I continued to read. My healing of smoking and drinking came almost at once. In a short time I was discharged from the hospital.

The healing of gambling took a few years. I liked to gamble, and in fact made money at it, and was disinclined to be healed of it. After joining a branch Church of Christ. Scientist, however, and becoming active in church work, I suddenly found myself completely healed. There has never been any return of a desire to gamble.
