My introduction to the healing power of Christian Science came after the birth of our first child, when, after an operation, I was left in a very weakened and serious condition. Like the woman we read of in the Bible who was "bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself" (Luke 13:11), so was I unable to sit or stand straight.

Some time before this my mother had given me a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and a copy of the Christian Science Hymnal. I loved the hymns, and when I felt able to do so, would play them on my piano and sing them. I had moved into an apartment house whose owner was a Christian Science practitioner and lived in the apartment above me.

One day this kind woman heard me singing and came to the door and asked if I was interested in Christian Science. I told her that I loved the hymns and the comfort I found in them, but that I knew very little about Christian Science. She left me some copies of the Sentinel and asked me to read them, and I did so. From then on I began to improve, and in about three weeks I walked to the church services with her, completely healed.
