MORNING AND EVENING SERVICE
In all Churches of Christ, Scientist, which have a Sunday evening service one hears the familiar announcement as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, "The evening service is a repetition of the morning service." Besides being merely an announcement, this statement expresses an arresting thought, and a deep significance can be derived from it when it is taken in its spiritual meaning.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 584), Mary Baker Eddy gives us the definition of day as "the irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love." In the same definition she says: "The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God's day, and 'there shall be no night there.'"
Morning and evening are generally considered to be parts of a twenty-four-hour day; but when one considers the foregoing definition, he realizes that in the spiritual meaning of day there is no morning or evening set off in man-made hours. Day is Mind's continuous measurement of time "according to the good that is unfolded," and in "the illumination of spiritual understanding" the objects of time —hours, minutes, seconds—completely disappear.
