A LIBRARIAN'S TESTIMONY

So long he stood before the window, gazing
Intently, small face earnest as he read,
That one inside the Reading Room who watched
Went out to him at last and gently said,
"What are you reading?"
A childish finger pointed to the Hymnal—
To hymn beloved by students far and wide.
"I'm learning the first verse," he shyly said,
But no more information would confide.

The next day he was there again, still striving
To learn the words, and she who watched the boy
Went out and asked him to accept a Hymnal,
Which gratefully he clasped, smiling with joy.

He did not come again, but some days later
A woman came into the Reading Room
And told that when she had been sick and weary
Her small son had gone home and banished gloom
By reading words about the gentle presence
Of peace and joy and power, words which revealed
To her something of Truth and Life and Love—
God's ever-presence; and she had been healed.
