Inscribed upon the flyleaf of my wife's copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, are to be found these words: "With heartfelt gratitude from Daddy and Roy" They were written when we were giving my wife her first present after we came into Christian Science. Even now after several years these words never fail to overwhelm me with humility and gratitude for a healing which has changed our lives and made a happy home where before were sickness, fear, and hopelessness. I write this testimony to glorify God and that it may help others to find the Christ when their load of suffering appears insupportable.
Our son, who at the time of the healing was nine years old, had suffered from asthma and bronchitis since the age of three years. Specialists, doctors, and hospitals were consulted in the hope of finding a cure. Despite these efforts the boy became steadily worse, and as a last desperate bid to save the lad, we left our comfortable home in North London and moved to a flat in Surrey. The change of air, however, made no difference in our son's health, although in despair we twice more moved our home. Finally, after three months in bed, the boy became so weak and emaciated that he was unable to stand alone, and the doctor prescribed morphia and strychnine.
My wife, who for weeks had taken turns at sitting up at night, became completely exhausted, and we were in this state when Christian Science came to us. Unknown to us and living almost opposite were some Christian Scientists. I thank God they had the courage to obey the angel message and offer us that cup of cold water in Christ's name. We were asked if we would accept Christian Science help, and feeling that all possible medical aid had been tried and had failed, we accepted this kind offer. That night we were told to go to bed, to trouble no more about the child, and to leave all to God.
