[Three branch church Sunday School teachers share with us in this column some of their experiences in teaching the Commandments and the Beatitudes.]

"A great work"

On one particular Sunday, in discussing with my class of seven-and eight-year-olds the great work of Nehemiah, I emphasized his faithfulness to the First Commandment. I asked the children to ponder the sentence they had learned to repeat (Neh. 6:3), "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." It was pointed out that each pupil is doing a great work when he is reflecting and expressing God. Like Nehemiah, each must be alert and unwilling to "come down" to error, or other gods. I explained how they can refuse to listen to anything unlike God, good.

They all understood that only as they listen for God's voice can they do His will and be really happy. They readily recognized that in reality there is no other voice to speak or to be heard. I pointed out how, like Nehemiah, they could say, "I cannot come down," to any error which suggests absence from Sunday School, failure to do homework, lack of interest or attention in class, or any other temptation. They all left the class that morning declaring with intelligence and joy, "I cannot come down to error, for I am doing a great work."

These alert little pupils, who are regular in their attendance, receive with enthusiasm any questions which may be assigned them for homework. Each session ends all too soon for both pupils and teacher. The hour seems much too short! We love our Sunday School and carry the joy of it throughout the week.
