In November, 1946, while traveling in the mountains of Andorra, I was seized each night with violent pains in my thighs and legs. These recurring pains brought so much physical suffering that in two weeks I had completely lost all desire to eat and had become exceedingly thin.

I had learned a little of Christian Science from my mother. I knew that God, infinite Love, does not send suffering, and I resolved to overcome this inharmonious condition by applying what I knew of Science. My comrades insisted that I call a doctor or take some kind of remedy for relief. But I refused all material help, though the suffering was becoming unbearable, I then wrote to my parents for help to sustain me. When my letter was received, a friend who was a Christian Science practitioner was at our home, and my mother asked her to give me absent treatment. This treatment resulted in permanent healing.

When the German armies retreated, I was in eastern France, and I had to get home to Bayonne as best I could. The train in which I was traveling went over a split rail, but there was no harm to any of the passengers. My mother had asked the same practitioner to help me during this trying experience, and I was divinely protected.
