My introduction to Christian Science...
My introduction to Christian Science came about through the reading of "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur. I was impressed by the spiritual nature of Mrs. Eddy, and the healing work which she did seemed to me very natural. I read the book through twice and then returned it to the Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It seemed to me the most wonderful book that I had ever read.
In a few weeks there was a noticeable improvement in my health, and very soon I was healed of a nervous condition and anemia. My family was interested in the healing, but I was interested in the truth I had read in this book. I would walk around reading it, sometimes aloud to anyone who would listen.
At one time as I opened a double window sash the top one fell, wedging my hand between the two. It presented a terrible picture to me, because I thought of a similar experience which my mother had had a few months before: one of her fingers had not healed properly and was crooked. Then my thought reached out to God for healing. and our Leader's assurance from page 424 of Science and Health that God knows nothing of accidents came to me. A great sense of peace and calm filled my consciousness. I called to my daughter. She answered, but she did not come immediately. She sensed no fear in my voice and thought I was simply calling her to breakfast. I called her a second time and asked her to come quickly. She could not lift the window, but called a neighbor to help. When my hand was released, I put it behind me without looking at it and sat down to read the textbook. Each time when resentment towards the one responsible for the broken window tried to enter my thinking, I replaced it with a great sense of love. In about half an hour I was turning the pages with that hand and was able to show it to my neighbor completely healed. At this time also my mother's finger straightened. Through the years I have found that Christian Science heals "all manner of disease among the people" (Matt. 4:23).
