Mary Baker Eddy writes in the...
Mary Baker Eddy writes in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 152), "Truth has a healing effect, even when not fully understood." This statement was proved true in an experience I had while on a trip to South America a number of years ago. After I had been confined to my stateroom for three days because of seasickness, I felt impelled to go out on deck for air and attempted to do so; however, I succeeded in getting no farther than one of the lounges. As I sat there surrounded by several fellow travelers who were endeavoring to cheer me up, my attention was attracted to a woman standing at the other side of the room; she was watching us and smiling. When everyone except this woman and myself had left the room, she came to my side, covered me with a steamer rug, and handed me a book, saying with a smile I have never forgotten, "You may find something in this book that will help you."
The book, which I had never seen before, was a copy of the Christian Science textbook. I glanced through its pages for some time, reading a sentence or paragraph here and there; and although nothing I read seemed understandable, I began to feel better. Finally I thought. There is nothing in this book for me, but I do so appreciate that woman's effort to help me and that loving smile. With this thought came complete freedom, and after returning the textbook and steamer rug to my benefactress, I went out on deck, accepted an invitation to participate in a deck sport, and had a very happy time the remaining two weeks or so on the ship.
Several years later, when at the recommendation of a business associate I began to read the textbook again and attend the services in The Mother Church, I remembered this experience and realized that the healing of seasickness had not just happened. It had been the effect of the truth I had read and the right thought of an alert Scientist.
