Although I had been brought up in Christian Science, my knowledge was principally of its letter. My spiritual growth seemed to come as a result of severe trials.

I should like to testify to the effectiveness of absent treatment in Christian Science. When bathing at one of our Florida beaches, I severely strained my back while carrying a large dog in the surf. The work which I did for myself was effective in removing the immediate ill effects, but a few days later, when I lifted a very heavy lawn chair, my back was so affected that I was almost completely disabled. The pain seemed intense; I could not sleep, sit, stand, or lie down with am degree of comfort. Inasmuch as we had five hundred miles to cover the next day to reach home on schedule and there was no other driver in the car, I was deeply concerned.

Great effort was made that night to clear my thinking, but morning found me still mesmerized by the discomfort of my condition. Consequently, after we had gone only a few miles, I stopped in a small town and wired a Christian Science practitioner for help. I was assured that the wire would be sent immediately, and we continued on our way. In a very short time I was entirely free from every vestige of physical complaint, and I drove the rest of the distance with case. I have not experienced any difficulty with my back since.
