In the Old Testament we read...
In the Old Testament we read (Isa. 42:16), "I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight."
Two years ago I was in a state of mental and physical misery, tormented by fear and an overwhelming sense of frustration. Every day was a struggle, and nights were disturbed and terrifying. I was afraid to apply for Christian Science help because of the position I then held, and I feared losing both my status and my home. Eventually, however, the conditions became so desperate that I saw very clearly that unless I turned to God unreservedly, I should not be able to continue with my daily duties. I wrote for help, and within a few days a Christian Science practitioner traveled eighty miles to see me. This act of love impressed and encouraged me, and from that time on I began to go forward. The improvement was slow, almost imperceptible at first, but treatment was continued, and I studied as much as I could. I memorized lines from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and also from the Christian Science Hymnal and the periodicals, and when the struggle seemed severe, these were recalled and sometimes declared audibly.
I was often tempted to feel discouraged, and I can never be sufficiently grateful for the joyous perseverance and spontaneity of the practitioner. One of the most wonderful experiences during that time was the way in which healing messages from the Bible and the textbook came to me when I was wakeful at night. One by one the rough places were made smooth. Restrictive environment at work was superseded by completely free and happy activity, a discordant human relationship was replaced by the happiest association in my experience, and there was continued physical improvement until complete healing came. I was, indeed, led in paths that I had not known; I emerged from darkness to light, and the crooked things became straight.
