ARE YOU EMPLOYABLE?
"Everything in God's universe expresses Him," writes Mary Baker Eddy in her revolutionary book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 331). God employs every quality, every idea of Himself, in order to express the fullness of His being. Every thought in divine Mind is ceaselessly active; otherwise the continuity of Mind's expression of itself would be broken. The forever activity of Mind, employing its own ideas in exhaustless self-expression, is the activity of Life. Since there can be only one infinite Mind, not two or many, it is all the Mind there is. It is not subject, therefore, to friction from that which calls itself another mind acting as a deterrent to the perpetual motion of Mind. No destructive, negative quality is to be found in all its realm of harmony.
Some of the beautiful qualities of Mind, God, are already unfolded to us, and they will continue to appear as we recognize more and more our true spiritual being as the reflection of God. Peace is one. Joy, the quality which Jesus mentions seven times, according to the Gospel of John, in his closing instructions to his apostles is another. Love, integrity, intelligence, spontaneity, trustworthiness, and many others are perceived to be characteristics of divine Mind. Man, being the complete expression of divine Mind, manifests these qualities. He is, therefore, forever employed. The employer is God. Man is eternally about his Father's business as the expression of the activity of Mind.
But let us see what it is that seems to be unemployed. If we are asking Love to employ hatred or resentment in order to express the nature of Love, we ask in vain. Do we ask integrity to give a job to dishonesty? If we are demanding that joy employ criticism and condemnation, we demand in vain. Are we asking courage to express itself through lack of courage, which is the meaning of the word discouragement? Before we decide that there is such a monstrous lie as unemployment in God's being, let us examine this false sense of a self apart from God and see whether we are asking God to do the impossible. Are we asking positive and everlasting Mind to employ something of which it is unconscious, and which, if it became conscious of it, would be self-destructive?
