Today I know that God is Love

Today I know that God is Love. I feel the unspeakable peace which comes from knowing that I am the beloved child of God.

For eight years I was a semi-invalid. During this time I underwent a major operation for a cancerous organic condition. This was followed by weekly experimental treatment in the hospital, where I was under the strictest of diets and subjected to much drugging. But the eminent surgeon and the many medical doctors who attended me offered no hope for my recovery, since the disease kept on spreading. Finally I became too weak to be about my household duties and was confined to bed.

Through our little son a loving neighbor sent me a book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It was inscribed, "With love." I had never heard of Christian Science and had no faith in any religion. The book lay on my night table for some time, unused. During this period I suffered more acutely from my wish to live and rear our child than from my unhealed condition. One night I felt I was dying and reached out for some comfort. I wished to see again the words. "With love." Unable to hold the book, I asked my husband to prop it up in front of me. God's guidance is surely great, for on the page where the book fell open, I instantly saw the words, "Life is God." I shall never forget the energizing effect that this message had on me. The words of the book seemed to talk to me, oh, so tenderly, about God as my divine Parent and me as His beloved child. I understood what I read; it illumined my thought.
