Jesus proved the mental nature of both space and matter, as witness his appearing before his disciples, "the doors being shut." On the lake, when the disciples because of adverse winds had been rowing all night and were yet a long way from the shore, Jesus came to them walking on the water and was received into the boat. "And immediately the ship was at the land whither they went" (John 6:21).

Jesus knew that in Spirit's allness there is no space or distance, and the knowing of this truth freed him and those with him from the limitations which a mistaken material belief in the reality of distance had imposed on them. In the same way that he nullified this belief he quieted the winds and the waves and overcame other discordant human concepts based upon what are falsely called laws of nature. He understood that such discords are not a manifestation of real nature, but they are illusions of the mortal or human mind.

Paul writes (Rom. 8:2), "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." An interesting newspaper comment on Christian Science published in 1895, soon after the dedication of The Mother Church, states (as quoted in Mary Baker Eddy's Pulpit and Press, p. 54): "That Jesus operated in perfect harmony with natural law, not in defiance, suppression, or violation of it, we cannot doubt. The perfectly natural is the perfectly spiritual." Inasmuch as the human mind prescribes the laws of nature, so called, the setting aside of any such law by the divine Mind does not involve a conflict of laws, but merely the assertion of real law as against unreal law. Jesus wrought his miracles, not by the suspension of law, but by the assertion of real law, the law of reality, of the real universe.
