THE GRATEFUL LITTLE BIRD

Charles is a little boy who stands at the window every evening watching for his daddy to come home from work. After dinner is over, and just before bedtime, he likes to climb up on his daddy's lap to hear a story. One evening his daddy asked him if he would like to hear about a grateful little bird.

Daddy had been visiting a farm that day. One of the barns on this farm had been empty for a long time. A window in this barn was broken, and through it flew many little sparrows to build their nests under the roof. When Daddy and the farmer opened the door of the barn and walked in, the little birds became frightened, for this was the first time anyone had gone into the barn for a long time. They flew in all directions trying to find a way out of the barn. Of course they didn't need to be afraid, because Daddy and the farmer loved them and didn't mean to frighten them.

One little bird flew toward a window that was not broken and fell to the ground after hitting the pane of glass. Daddy picked it up and, holding it in his hand, stroked its head with one of his fingers.
