THE ONLY WILL

The Holy Bible contains many promises of great helpfulness and significance. One such promise is to be found in Luke (10:19): "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." These words, spoken by Jesus the Christ, promise us spiritual power and the ability to exercise it. We utilize this power effectively in proportion to our understanding of the Christ, or in other words by Christlikeness.

Human will does not enter into the practice of Christian Science, for the human or mortal will is opposed to the divine. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 144), "Human will-power is not Science." And she continues, "Willing the sick to recover is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism."

The divine will is revealed in response to righteous prayer, which recognizes the oneness, wholeness, and allness of God. Subordination of the human to the divine silences human will, from which emanate fear and its consequent failure, and reveals the unlabored action of the divine Mind and the spiritual power which it includes. The spiritual power bestowed by the Christ is the manifestation of the power of God. It is for us the recognition of the presence of God, good, or God with us.
