The Mission of the Advertising Activity

After her discovery of Christian Science, in gratitude, our beloved Leader is purported to have whispered, "'Dear God, may I not take this precious truth and give it to my brothers and sisters?'" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 62.) This was the keynote to all she did thereafter. In establishing The Mother Church and its various activities, she had one intent—to share the healing truth with all. It was natural, therefore, that Mrs. Eddy envisioned a healing purpose for her newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor, which she founded to bless the world.

It follows that the mission of the Monitor advertising activity is likewise to heal. It takes Christian Science into the business world, while supplying a legitimate business need and producing revenue for the Monitor's own continuance. In thus rendering unto the world Caesar's demands, it miraculously and simultaneously fulfills also Jesus' command to render "unto God the things that are God's."

Our seven hundred advertising representatives have, therefore, a twofold purpose: to sell advertising and to act as missionaries for Christian Science. This phase of our church work differs from all others. Whereas people enter our churches, attend our lectures, visit our Reading Rooms, and call upon our practitioners voluntarily, the advertising representatives approach their prospects uninvited. Sometimes the representatives may meet resistance, stemming from prejudice or ignorance. In such cases, the healing mission of the advertising activities begins then and there.
