While teaching in a far-western...
While teaching in a far-western city many years ago, I attended a Sunday evening service which was being held in a large and popular Protestant church. The minister was earnestly endeavoring to show what he considered to be fallacies in the Christian Science fallacies in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Because of his remarks, I was led to purchase a pamphlet written by this same minister. Up to this point my attitude towards Christian Science had been that of mild prejudice. I did not care to investigate what I then thought was a strange religion, although my little sister had been brought back from death's door through Christian Science treatment.
In a few months I married a Christian Scientist and took the little pamphlet into my new home. My husband agreed to read it if I would take up the study of Christian Science, and this I readily agreed to do. Since my desire was to discover the truth of the matter, I took the pamphlet, the Bible, and the textbook and began to look up the citations as the minister had arranged them. Very soon the falsity of the presentation was apparent, the pamphlet was consigned to the fire, and I turned to Science and Health, reading carefully the chapter on Prayer. I realized that Mrs. Eddy had given the truth to mankind, and I was happy to take up the study of this Science.
Sick headaches which had plagued me for a long time vanished, never to return. Only a few months after this healing I was able to help my husband overcome an attack of acute indigestion. While I was yet a new student of Christian Science, my father-in-law lay critically ill. My husband and other members of the family were with him, but I chose to remain at home to quiet the sense of fear. I opened the textbook at random and proceeded to read page after page, until peace came to my consciousness. In talking with this relative afterwards, he stated that about the time my fear abated, he manifested improvement. His health was restored, and he was a student of Christian Science during the last few years of his life.
