The Bishop of Birmingham (Dr. Barnes) in a sermon to members of the British Medical Association . . . was convinced that ultimate reality was mental or spiritual. . . .

"I have no belief in the existence of material substance" [he said]. "The progress of medical science has caused many to believe that in matter and its changes we reach the fundamental of our world. My own endeavor to understand the universe leads me to the conclusion that the fundamental reality of the universe is a supreme mind."
