ON OUR GUARD

Army officers are well versed in the importance of being always on guard, always alert against surprise attack, and always unwilling to credit unconfirmed rumors. The value of protection is universally acknowledged, but since its worth is in proportion to its certainty, the Christian Scientist knows that complete protection from evil can never be obtained from matter, but only from the understanding of the omnipresence and omnipotence of God, divine Love.

It might be well to ask ourselves, "What are we trying to protect, and from what?" If we are believing that we possess a physical body and are trying to protect it from material hazards, then we are denying the allness and perfection of God, and man as His spiritual, perfect idea; in other words, we are resisting the operation of divine law in our consciousness and entertaining the enemy, evil, instead.

If inharmony is manifested in our human experience, we have not been guarding our thought against the suggestions of mortal mind, alias animal magnetism, but have been falsely endowing matter with reality and power. It is from such wrong thinking that we must protect ourselves.
