I did not come into Christian Science...
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, but one day in 1920, when tidying a bookcase, I came across the textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. My curiosity being aroused, I commenced to read and was greatly impressed by the chapter on Prayer. However, as I perused the book further, I felt afraid to continue lest its teachings should conflict with the religious views which I then held. In 1930 I again came across the same book, and this time I determined to read it through. I read it night and day and could not read anything else. The spiritual uplift was wonderful.
After reading the textbook for two weeks, I was healed almost instantaneously of an abscess in the neck which had developed during this period. I had occasion to go to town on business, and as I traveled I pondered what I had read. The tenth verse of the ninety-first Psalm came to my thought, "There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." This promise seemed very real to me, and I felt sure that God would heal me. Suddenly the light of Truth flooded my consciousness: I was no longer aware of a matter-body; I was cognizant only of the presence of the Christ, It is not possible adequately to describe this sacred experience. When I arrived home a few hours later, the abscess had entirely disappeared, and the neck was normal. The healing of constipation, from which I had suffered since birth, must have taken place at the same time, for that condition has never recurred.
I have had many healings since then. Indigestion, ulcers in the mouth, and stomach trouble, for which previously many material remedies had been tried without avail, have all been overcome in Christian Science, some with the help of practitioners or friends and others through my own understanding. I am particularly grateful for the help of a practitioner by absent treatment during a very trying ordeal.
