A number of years ago when I...

A number of years ago when I was a very young student of Christian Science, my first written testimony appeared in a Sentinel. During the years that have followed I have had many proofs of God's goodness and tender care for His children and am now reminded of the following words from page 444 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'"

Of my many encouraging experiences, I should like to relate the following. One Sunday morning I was suddenly attacked by severe symptoms of dysentery. Seemingly making no progress as a result of my own work on the first day, I called upon a Christian Science practitioner for help. The next morning, although there was no abatement of the severity of the attack, I decided that I would stand on these two statements from our textbook: "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself" (p. 385), and, "Disease is less than mind, and Mind can control it" (p. 378). For two days I experienced no relief, but I stood firm despite severe pain, ate normal meals, and continued with my regular duties.

On the morning of the third day, although feeling worse, I took a journey to join in a Christmas family gathering. I was grateful that no member of the several families, none of whom were interested in Christian Science, appeared to notice that there was anything amiss. I joined in the various festivities and shared in the special and varied items of food placed before me. The next morning I awakened feeling completely well and without an evidence of the disease. That day I spent staining, by hand, the floors of a new house into which we were moving, and ended a long and strenuous day feeling as fresh as, if not more fresh than, when I started.
