When Christian Science found...
When Christian Science found me, or rather when I found Christian Science, I was in a very feeble, run-down condition from what is known as female trouble, following the birth of our first child. There were many foods I could not eat; and a peaceful sleep at night was something I did not have. I could be on my feet for only a short time and could not remember anything said to me. Many times I would start to tell something, but what I started to say would leave me. I went from one doctor to another. I had already had two operations, and a third one was also advised.
For twenty-two years I lived this kind of life and had reached the place where I thought I was nearing the end. At this point, a neighbor asked me to try Christian Science. I said I would, but that if I found one place in the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, where it contradicted the Bible, I would immediately stop, for I would die rather than go contrary to what the Bible taught. But I failed to find that place. Since many healings are quick, I expected mine to be, and often shed tears, feeling much discouraged. One day while reading the testimonies in the Sentinel, I came upon one which told of a slow healing. This gave me fresh courage to keep on trying, because I knew there was nothing else for me.
We were living twenty-five miles from a practitioner and depending on a party line telephone for communication. The first improvement I could see was that I had been enjoying peaceful sleep. Then I saw I was eating everything that was set before me, and it did not hurt me. In a year's time I had gained in weight from ninety pounds to one hundred and thirty-six pounds. Old friends would pass me by on the street and not speak unless I called to them. Then they would look at me and say: "What have you been doing? I did not recognize you." One woman said, "I am not a believer in Christian Science; but we expected to be called any day to bury that woman, and look at her now!"
