My gratitude to God for Christian Science...
My gratitude to God for Christian Science is not easily expressed in words. It was in 1908 that Science came into my experience. At that time my brother-in-law and a friend of his were healed of the drinking habit, and a woman who I thought had passed on years before told me of her healing of violent attacks of asthma.
My sister persuaded me to have a treatment for headaches from which I had suffered since childhood, finding only very temporary relief despite osteopathic treatments, violet rays, and many other material remedies. I went into the practitioner's office so blinded with pain I could scarcely open my eyes. In twenty minutes he dismissed me. My sister asked me in a little while how my head was feeling. I stood still, unable to recall what a headache was like. My thought was not yet ready to accept Christian Science, for there was still a great sense of hatred toward religion on account of an injustice I had experienced in girlhood, and I believed the Bible false.
Some four years later, when I was almost ready to take my own life because of great mental anguish, my sister sent me some Sentinels and begged me to read the testimonies. Many of them told of the peace the writers had found in Christian Science. This made me wonder if there was still something left worth living for. I felt far away from God and did not know how to pray, but the Lord's Prayer seemed safe, since Jesus had given it to his disciples. While awake, I repeated it constantly. In two weeks unexpected means were provided for my return to home and family. At this time my sister gave me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The first time I read it, it sounded very foreign to my darkened thought; but when I started reading it a second time, the light began to come and knew I had found the truth.
