THE CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST IN THE BUSINESS WORLD

One Monday morning a salesman started out on his appointed round, offering a useful item of merchandise to a waiting market. A consecrated Christian Scientist, he was endeavoring to demonstrate that God is the only power and presence and to take each human step under divine guidance.

Inspired by the week's Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly, which he had just finished reading, he saw clearly that man is not controlled by the devious and varying laws of supply and demand which mortals believe govern their failure or success. Man, the idea of God, is ever about his Father's business, reflecting divine Love. As God's representative, he expresses goodness, intelligence, good will, and usefulness. Thus his activities are controlled by divine Mind and are not subject to such considerations as prices, competition, oversupply, scarcity, weather conditions, personal influences, prejudices, and many similar mortal mind factors. He realized that these were not realities, but temporary human beliefs to be so understood and overcome with Truth. He had been taught in Christian Science that the only reality is God and His idea, man, and that as a son of God his true identity or selfhood is entirely spiritual.

This salesman knew that he was not governed by conditions averred to be beyond control, as fatigue, disappointment, wasted time and effort, or the rebuffs which often make selling a hardship. Neither was he the victim of beliefs in chance, luck, or "breaks." as the saying goes. Understanding that man is the spiritual idea of God, not a mortal struggling for a livelihood, he met these suggestions as their master. He was so busy being about the Father's business of reflecting good that his success was inevitable.
