Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...
Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), "Desire is prayer." Christian Science came into my life as the result of a great longing for only that which is highest and best. After ten years of invalidism in my girlhood, this desire was the only prayer left in my thought. Though brought up in a home where God and the Bible were highly revered, I had closed my Bible because I could not sufficiently understand it. I had stopped praying because my prayer for healing was not answered. Materia medica had utterly failed; so when a friend opened the door to Christian Science, there was no regret experienced at leaving materia medica and scholastic theology on the doorstep. However, there was apprehension in regard to Science healing. Consequently progress was slow until I was ready wholeheartedly to accept the facts of Truth patiently and lovingly presented to me by a student of Mrs. Eddy. This practitioner later became my teacher of Christian Science.
The healing then proceeded rapidly until great freedom from both physical and mental suffering was realized. I was truly formed anew and began to live an active life, which included participation in the work of a Christian Science branch church and the study of music. Later I brought up a daughter entirely with the help of Christian Science. Many times we have proved together the truth expressed in Science and Health (p. 60), "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul."
Many years have passed, and today I am rejoicing in the fact that Christian Science has never failed to solve every problem that has presented itself and to maintain peace in my consciousness. The last verse of Hymn No. 46 from the Christian Science Hymnal best expresses my heart's desire:
