A STORY ABOUT BIRDS

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Shirley had a new yellow canary named Charlie, and he sang in his cage all day long. Mother knew that Shirley would like to let the little bird out to fly around the room. So one day she screened off a light, sunny corner of the room and tacked branches around so that Charlie would have a place to himself, separate from the other part of the room. Shirley was delighted and opened the door of Charlie's cage for him to fly to his playground. He flew from his cage, settled on one of the branches, and soon burst into song.

Then one day Shirley came home and told Mother she had seen a canary in a tiny cage and she thought how much it would like to fly around with Charlie and what good company it would be for him. They had an extra cage in the attic, so Mother told Shirley she could buy the canary.

They called the new bird Mike, and when he saw that he could come out of his little box and fly around he seemed very happy. But oh, what a surprise Mother and Shirley had! For, instead of Charlie being pleased to have company, he flew at Mike and pecked at him. He chased Mike all around, until finally Mike flew into his cage for protection. Even then Charlie hopped on the top of the cage and continued to scold Mike.
