I wish to share a deep sense of...

I wish to share a deep sense of gratitude for the great comfort and protection Christian Science has given me in recent years. Although many blessings have been mine, my period of service in the armed forces brought new demands and grand demonstrations.

A notable experience was traveling overseas aboard a large new repair ship. Submarine contact was made by our radar, but I held unswervingly to our great teachings, and a calm conviction of the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words (Poems, p. 4), "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power," brought safety. In two hours the enemy was lost. I was in the Pacific fourteen months and at Luzon one month after the American forces landed. During our entire travels no shot was ever fired at us, and we never fired a shot from our ship. During nearly four and a half years with the armed forces I never saw a single instance of death, either of enemy or ally. This, I feel sure, was due to a clear understanding of Jesus' words (John 8:51), "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death."

Our ship made a notable record of achievement, completing four hundred to five hundred per cent more work than was believed possible. Although we did many large repair jobs, no serious accidents occurred in the handling of work or materials. Frequently the so-called impossible was done quickly. I believe ours was one of the few ships on which intoxicating liquor or beer was never served.
