GOD IS

Many Christian Scientists have had the experience of reading passages from the Bible or from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy over and over again until, one day, these passages suddenly took on new meaning. A student of Christian Science had this experience recently when attending a lecture given by a member of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church. From where he was sitting he could see two words on the wall of the church behind the Readers' desks: "God is."

Instantly he reasoned that, of course, God is, and that the knowing of this truth could bring great blessings. Although he could not see the word that followed "God is," he realized that it was "Love," having read and loved that inscription on the walls of Christian Science churches since the time he was a pupil in the Sunday School.

These two words "God is" were quite enough to start a long train of metaphysical reasoning. He realized that because God is, Mind is. Because God is, Principle is. And then, in quick succession, he saw that because God is, Truth is; Life is; Love is. These synonyms for God are from the definition of God in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 587): "The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."
