To Obey Is to Honor

[Of Special Interest to Children]

One day when Jesus was in the synagogue, he said to a man (Luke 6:8), "Stand forth in the midst," which meant to step forward out of the crowd. One of the man's hands was withered and he wasn't able to use it. There were so many people there that the man could have said, "I'm afraid to stand out in front of all these people," but instead he stepped forward. Then Jesus said (verse 10), "Stretch forth thy hand." Again the man could have been disobedient, but when he obeyed and put his hand out in front of him as Jesus told him to, his hand was made strong and useful again; it was no longer shriveled up, but was just like his other one.

When the man with the withered hand obeyed Christ Jesus, he honored God's Son, for he was acknowledging the authority of and perhaps accepting a little of the Christ, Truth, which Jesus came to prove to the world. Because he did that, he honored God, the Father. Jesus said (John 5:23), "He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him."

The fifth commandment says (Ex. 20:12), "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." One of the best ways to honor our human parents is to obey what they tell us to do. We obey because we love them, and because we would like to show them how much we love them.
