Summer Classes

During the summer, when many people take vacations of either long or short duration, not infrequently it becomes necessary to make some changes in the organization of the Sunday School classes in order to meet the changing conditions. In some Sunday Schools a number of pupils go to summer camp where they remain for some weeks, and the Sunday School attendance decreases accordingly. However, the fact that children are away from their regular classes does not necessarily mean that they need to be absent from Sunday School.

Many children are able to attend Christian Science Sunday School in the localities where they are spending their vacations. Thus it is that certain Sunday Schools, particularly those in the resort districts, experience an increase in Sunday School attendance in the summer rather than a decrease. This sometimes occurs too in localities where the churches of other denominations close their Sunday Schools for the summer and some parents of other religious faiths send their children to the Christian Science Sunday School for the season.

Regardless of the number of pupils in attendance, it is expected that Christian Science Sunday Schools will remain open throughout the year, and that the usual high standard of teaching and the same thoughtful attention to the organizing of the classes will continue. Each branch of The Mother Church makes its own plans for the Sunday School, guided by the Church Manual. (See Article XXIII, Sections 1 and 10.) There is, therefore, no particular plan which is to be followed by all churches and societies for the summer season. A plan that works out successfully in one locality may or may not be adaptable to another. The important thing is that the pupils' interest in the Sunday School, whether they are away or remaining in their regular classes, should not be allowed to lag.
