The Purpose of Law
Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "God controls man, and God is the only Spirit." This statement, which appears in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 73), is a statement of absolute fact which cannot be set aside by ignorance, self-will, or the deliberate blindness of mortals.
Human experience shows that as men have risen in the scale of intelligence, love, and wisdom, they have seen the necessity for, and have established and enforced, laws for the protection and progress of mankind.
Our great Master, Christ Jesus,' left us the imperative command (Matt. 10:8), "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." The church which he founded obeyed this command until it began to worship his personality and to be more concerned with ritual and outward forms than with inner purification and devotion. The result was the loss of dominion which obedience to God's laws gives.
