A year and a half after I became...

A year and a half after I became interested in Christian Science a friend asked me whether or not I had considered joining the Christian Science church. I told him that sometime I might join, but that I had read the Tenets and did not feel ready to subscribe to them. He inquired if any one tenet in particular seemed difficult to accept, and I replied that the sixth one had been. This tenet reads (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 497): "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure." Then he spoke of the protection that taking the step of church membership affords. I gave the matter consideration, made application for membership in The Mother Church and in a local church, and was accepted for both.

Later, after the experience of class instruction, it was through trying to understand and put into practice the sixth tenet that I came to understand more clearly than I had before the nature of divine Love—that human love is not divine Love, but that Love, God, is always expressed in unselfed love.

During this proving period there were times of confusion and physical difficulty for several concerned, but when thought adhered strictly to this tenet, pleasant companionships and harmony resulted for all involved. It was also proved that "whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself" (Science and Health, p. 385).
